English version

Weighing workers in Tosano’s (VéGé) fruit and vegetable department

Among the department’s peculiarities, in addition to the assortment depth, there is also the possibility of shopping in the catering area

In the panorama of large-scale Italian retail trade, the opening of a new Tosano hypermarket in the Milanese hinterland was an important event, because it is the first store outside the chosen area, Veneto and eastern Lombardy, of the brand that is part of the Végé Group. This Tosano Hypermarket is located in Nerviano, on the outskirts of Milan, on the Sempione state road, a busy artery towards Switzerland, where there was a former Auchan store and, after Covid, a former Bennet store. Among the various peculiarities of the format, it is also interesting to focus on the fruit and vegetable department, which is not located at the opening of the store, but immediately after the area reserved for promotions.

There are several elements that characterize this department: the most unusual, certainly not for Tosano stores, but in general for the stores in the Milan area, is the presence of employees who are not just those who move the boxes or fill the shelves. Although it remains a self-service department, the consumer chooses the products to buy from the counters or from the refrigerators, but, in the case of loose products, the products are weighed by employees who are at the end of the department space – three of them were present on the opening day – who can thus give information and advice to those who ask for this.

The department is spread over a central area where there are loose products and some refrigerated islands with offers and fourth and fifth range products, while, along the perimeter walls, on the right there are about 20 meters of refrigerators containing a choice of organic products, a large assortment of packaged apples. On the other side, there are shelves containing a wide selection of dried fruit and nuts. Even in the fruit and vegetable department, it is possible to find a selection of large-format products designed for ‘catering’ customers and the Ho.re.ca. world.

The layout includes, in the case of vegetables, counters with Natural Misting nebulizers, which have a certain scenic effect, but are also an element that allows for maintaining a constant humidity value, especially on leafy vegetables. Dehydration of fruit and vegetables is prevented and this allows for longer conservation and a significant reduction in waste.

Finally, as in the entire store, the presence of large hand-written signs to underline both offers and affordability of the purchase is peculiar. On the other hand, these signs are accompanied by the technological choice of using large-format electronic labels, supplied by Pricer, which can be dynamically updated and provide a lot of information both to the store staff and to the consumer.
